Professional Experience:

1985-present: University of Alabama in Huntsville, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering: professor of mechanical engineering.

Main responsibilities include developing laboratories and teaching courses in engineering mechanics (statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, continuum mechanics, elasticity, etc.) and applied optics (experimental stress analysis, optical techniques in solid mechanics, etc.). Teaching evaluations among highest at UAH; received distinguished faculty and teaching awards; selected as College of Engineering’s Outstanding Faculty Member; and, nominated by President Franz for Carnegie/CASE Teaching Award. Member of graduate faculty. Major advisor for numerous Ph.D. and M.S. thesis projects with students enrolled in five different programs (MAE, CEE, ECE, OSE, Physics).

Committee service includes Faculty Appeals; Strategic Planning; Optical Science and Engineering Doctoral Program; College Promotion and Tenure; College Advisory; College Safety; College Shop; Departmental Graduate; Departmental Strategic Planning; Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Undergraduate Program, Civil and Environmental Engineering Undergraduate Program; search and screen committees including Dean of Engineering, and Director of the Center for Applied Optics; reappointment and tenure committees in and outside of UAH; thesis committees in and outside of UAH.

Current research is in holo-interferometry, speckle metrology, non-destructive evaluation, radial metrology, gravity shielding, photoelastic fiber-optic accelerometers, diffractive optic interferometry, and strategically tuned, absolutely resilient structures. Areas of application include detecting material flaws, measuring thermal/mechanical deformations, performing modal analysis, and profiling structural components.

1976-85: University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Department of Civil Engineering: assistant professor; associate professor.

Main responsibility was the development of laboratories and teaching/research programs in engineering mechanics and applied optics; faculty advisor for Society of Women Engineers (1978-80); co-founder and colloquium coordinator for the Mechanics Fellowship. Taught courses in experimental stress analysis, applied optics, continuum mechanics, and engineering mechanics. Teaching evaluations among highest in College of Engineering; nominated by department for AMACO distinguished teaching award. Advisor for seventeen M.S. and eight B.S. thesis projects.
