All MSE students must have a program of study approved by a supervisory committee. The final examination depends on the option a student chooses.
Plan I or Thesis Option:
The plan requires 24 semester hours of coursework plus a thesis, and the student must defend his/her thesis as a final examination.
Plan II or non-thesis Option:
This plan requires 36 semester hours. If the program of study includes the capstone courses (CM601, EE691, and EE692), There will be no final examination. If these courses are not included, a comprehensive final examination of the student is required.
Based on the student’s performance in the MSE final examination, the
student’s supervisory committee may recommend him/her to the ECE Chair
to be considered for admission to the Ph.D. program without the required
preliminary examination.
The examination committee is composed of at least three graduate faculty members, and is usually (but not always) the same as the supervisory committee. The advisor in consultation with the student selects the members of the examining committee. Moreover, the examining committee is composed of faculty members whose areas of expertise cover the areas listed on the student's program of study as close as possible. The majority of the committee must be composed of full-time UAH faculty members.
Once set, the examination becomes an official University matter. The exam cannot be changed without prior arrangements (done by the chairman of the committee) amongst the committee members and the student, and approval of the graduate dean.
In all instances oral examinations are considered to be open to the members of the University community.
A student working toward a master's degree under Plan I (thesis) or Plan II (nonthesis) is required to fill out the following forms in sequence. Required approvals are as shown on the forms, and number of copies is as needed or specified by the department.
1. Program of Study. It must be filed as early as possible but
before the completion of 12 semester hours at UAH.
2. Petition for a change in the Program of Study, if any. A valid
reason should be given for the change.
3. Application for Advanced Degree; to be filed at least three months
before the final examination. Issued by the Office of Student Records.
4. Notification of Final/Qualifying Examination. Notification
of the examination date must be given at least two weeks in advance. The
final examination must be taken at least six weeks before graduation, and
not earlier than the term in which the student completes all required course
work.
MSE TIME LIMIT; VALIDATION OF OUT-OF-DATE COURSES
All requirements for the master's degree should be completed in not
more than six years. Credit for individual graduate courses completed
more than six years but less than ten before the completion of all requirements
for the degree may be validated by special examination. Such an examination
given by the department can be taken only once and will be the equivalent
of a final examination in the course. When the student passes the examination
the course is
considered valid until the tenth year only.
Credit for out-of-date courses transferred from other institutions cannot
be validated at UAH.
