The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has a number of teaching and research assistantships available for qualified full-time students who are admitted into the graduate programs in the department. Teaching assistants normally aid professors in large courses by teaching laboratory, teaching problem sessions, or grading papers. Research assistants are appointed to help professors in their research.
Students holding teaching or research assistantships must register for at least nine (9), and not more than twelve (12) credit hours each semester. The ECE Director of Graduate Studies continuously reviews the record and progress of every graduate student.
Assistantship appointments are made by the ECE Department Chairman,
usually for 20 hours of work per week at rates set by the School of Graduate
Studies. The rates vary depending upon the student's graduate seniority
standing. Tuition is paid on behalf of the assistants.
Support for assistants has time limitations. Master's degree student
assistants, should not expect funding for more than two academic years.
For doctoral students who have successfully completed the
preliminary examination, funding is limited to two academic years.
In all cases, funding of course depends on the availability of resources,
satisfactory progress toward a degree and satisfactory performance in carrying
out duties related to the assistantship.
