Bridge Design: Use an interactive computer simulation model to design a truss bridge to carry the load of a truck. Build a scale model of your bridge and test it for failure.

Circuits & Sensors: Learn how sensors obtain information from their environment, and how they convert this information into electrical signals. Then put it together: assemble and test your circuit with its sensors.

Robotics Challenge: Use your imagination to design your team robot. Then create and download computer programs to make it follow your commands. Which team will win the Robo Challenge?

Chemical Reactions: Learn to use a three dimensional microscope, measure the chemical kinetics of an enzyme catalyzed reaction and the principles that govern it, and make your own take-home souvenir!

Optics:

Rocket Launch: Can you be the von Braun of tomorrow? Design your rocket and launch it. Did it reach high enough to complete the mission?

Camp Faculty and Staff

ESC 2008 activities will be led and supervised by College of Engineering (COE) faculty. Camp faculty are chosen for their dedication and their ability to work with young people as well as their particular expertise in engineering.

Camp faculty represent all five departments at the COE. They will share their practical knowledge and skills in ways that will stimulate learning and critical thinking.

Assistance and additional supervision will be provided by COE staff and graduate students.

Directions and Campus Map

Meeting times and locations:
ESC 2008 students will meet every morning at 8:30 am :
M, T, Th, F: Technology Hall (#36 on the UAH Campus Map
)
W: Engineering Building (#26 on the UAH Campus Map
)

Parent pick up is 4:00 pm at the same locations as morning meeting.

From I-565:

To Technology Hall:

  • Take exit 15 to Sparkman Drive and go north
  • Turn left at the first light ( Technology Drive)
  • Olin B. King Technology Hall will be on your left

    To Engineering Building:

  • Take exit 15 to Sparkman Drive and go north
  • Turn right at the first light. The lake will be on your left
  • Turn left keeping the pond on your left
  • Turn Right at the second stop sign
  • The Engineering building will be on your right 
  • From University Drive (US 72):

    To Technology Hall:

  • Turn south on Sparkman Drive
  • If heading east on University , turn right at the fourth light (Technology Drive)
  • If heading west on University Drive, turn right at the fifth light
  • Olin B. King Technology Hall will be on your left

    To Engineering Building:

  • Turn south on Sparkman Drive
  • If heading east on University Drive , turn left at the fourth light
  • If heading west on University Drive, turn right at the fifth light
  • Turn left keeping the pond on your left
  • Turn Right at the second stop sign
  • The Engineering building will be on your right

    Registration And Scholarship Information

    Enrollment is limited to 20 students per session – sign up today!

    Ages:
    ESC is designed for rising high school juniors and seniors.
    However, interested graduating seniors will be considered as well.

    Dates:
    June 9-13, 2008 (Date changed from June 16-20)
    or
    July 14-18, 2008

    Fee: $350.00.
    Camp fees include all supplies and materials, lunch, instruction by UAH College of Engineering faculty, and prizes.

    Scholarship:
    A limited number of full and partial need-based scholarships will be available. Please complete the Scholarship Application and submit with your Camp Application.

    Get Adobe Reader if you need to download the Adobe Acrobat reader.  Please follow the checklist below when submitting your Camp Application: 

  • ESC 2008 Application
  • Release, Consent and Indemnity
  • Include a check in the amount of $350.00 payable to UAH Foundation (unless applying for a scholarship)
  • Scholarship Application (optional)

    Housing Information

    Engineering Summer Camp is a non-residential day camp. However, we welcome and encourage students from a wide geographical area to attend.

    While housing is not covered by Camp fees, affordable, on-campus housing for the week of ESC can be arranged individually between a student and University Housing.

    A signed copy of the Housing Release Form must be submitted to the office of University Housing before a student can stay there.
